an ongoing list of phrases and such in Lebanese dialect, though I am probably learning more French in Beirut than Arabic:
tihki arabi? you speak Arabic?
[to which I reply] shwaayyi... a little...
nishkrallah! t'ank god.
smullah! how big you've grown! (usually in comparison to my 5' 9'' + to my relative's 5' 4" - ) or, better, how fat you've grown!
abusu ana! I kiss your face! (usually accompanied by a firm pinch of the cheek)
why you study damascus? why no here? why would you want to live in syria when you are already in lebanon? with your family?
he work? she cook lebanese? they have big house? zee marriage is good? your family is happy and healthy and bringing honor and pride to the family name?
